Report: Cuba improves dissident treatment

HAVANA, May 24 (UPI) -- Cuba's Communist government is taking steps to improve its treatment of jailed dissidents, a journalist says.

Guillermo Farinas, an independent journalist staging a hunger strike to pressure Cuba to release 26 sick political prisoners, told El Nuevo Herald he had been told the government promised to move the ill dissidents to hospitals, and will move others to facilities closer to home.

Farinas said Havana Auxiliary Bishop Juan de Dios Hernandez told him Saturday that, eventually, some of the 190 or so political prisoners could be released.

The inmate transfers were expected to begin Monday, Farinas said.

There has been no official word from Havana but human rights activist Elizardo Sanchez said he had learned some inmates were told to pack their belongings.
