Body found in drum in lake

TORONTO, May 24 (UPI) -- Human remains encased in concrete were found in a steel barrel pulled from Lake Ontario in Toronto, Canadian police said.

The 45-gallon barrel was pulled from about 20 feet of grease-slicked water Sunday on Queens Quay in an industrial location, the Toronto Marine Unit said.

Police said they were tipped to the location of the barrel and knew the identity of the body but did not plan to release any further information until an autopsy was completed, the Toronto Star reported Monday.

"Obviously, we don't deal with bodies encased in concrete very often. We have to rely on the expertise of the members of the coroner's office," police spokesman Justin Vander Heyden said.

More than one person likely was involved in dumping the barrel, Vander Heyden said.

"Obviously that barrel of concrete is going to weigh quite some amount," he said. "I speculate that this would be some sort of organized effort to get this body here."
