Investigators said a metal wardrobe and box on top of the bus hit the overhead wire in the village of Mandla Thursday. When the passengers attempted to get off, they grasped metal railings, sending a fatal current through their bodies, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Some passengers survived, many with severe burns.

Police said the owner of the bus and its driver and conductor would face criminal charges, PTI said.

A similar accident occurred Thursday in Bihar when a truck carrying passengers hit an overhead line, killing 15 people, the Telegraph said.
