Enormous rare oarfish found in Sweden

BOHUSLAN, Sweden, May 11 (UPI) -- A Swedish fisherman found a dead giant oarfish more than 3.5 yards long -- a type of fish last seen in Swedish waters 131 years ago.

Kurt Ove Eriksson, 73, of Bohuslan, discovered the fish, often called the "king of herrings," floating near his harbor hut, the Swedish Local reported Tuesday.

"Down by the water there was something large, floating. At first we thought it was a large piece of plastic, but then we saw an eye. I went down to check and saw that it was a very strange looking fish," said Eriksson.

Giant oarfish can grow up to approximately 13 yards long and weigh 600 pounds, and are usually found in oceans. They surface only when dead, the Local reported.

The Natural History Museum in Stockholm is deciding whether to preserve the enormous fish, the Local said.
