HARARE, Zimbabwe, May 10 (UPI) -- Zimbabwe politician Roy Bennett, a longtime opponent of President Robert Mugabe, was acquitted of charges including terrorism, Bennett's attorney said Monday.
Bennett is an aide to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and treasurer general for the Movement for Democratic Change, which is sharing governance with Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.
Bennett's trial originally was to start in October 2009, but it was postponed as claims surfaced that evidence alleging his involvement in a plot to overthrow Mugabe was collected through torture, CNN reported.
Besides the terrorism charge, Bennett faced charges of possessing weapons for sabotage and banditry, his attorney said.
