RCMP gets restrictions on stun gun use

OTTAWA, May 4 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police Tuesday announced new restrictions on the use of stun guns following the death of a Polish immigrant.

The RCMP said in a news release stun guns should be fired only when "a subject is causing bodily harm, or the police believe … the subject will imminently cause bodily harm."

The order follows the October 2007 death of Robert Dziekanski, who was stunned repeatedly in a confrontation with police after he started throwing furniture around Vancouver International Airport.

Canwest news service reported the new policy also requires police to issue a verbal warning before a stun gun is fired.
