Military homicide suspect on hunger strike

NAPANEE, Ontario, April 8 (UPI) -- A Canadian military officer jailed in Ontario on homicide and sexual assault charges reportedly has gone on a hunger strike after a foiled suicide attempt.

A former jail employee at the Napanee facility, who wasn't identified, told the Kingston Whig-Standard Col. Russell Williams, 47, was refusing to eat after a weekend suffocation suicide attempt.

Williams was the commander of Canada's largest military base in Trenton, Ontario, when he was charged in February with two first-degree murder charges and two sexual assaults dating from September through February.

In a note Williams wrote on his cell wall with mustard early Saturday, he said he had put his affairs in order and wasn't capable of facing his April 29 court appearance.

He was rescued by guards who had to unblock a jammed door lock and remove a toilet paper roll from his throat, the Ottawa Citizen said.
