SOFIA, Bulgaria, March 26 (UPI) -- The Bulgarian National Assembly has begun proceedings seeking the impeachment of President Georgi Parvanov for allegedly violating the constitution.
A draft motion was supported by 162 members, two more than legally required, in Sofia Thursday and accuses Parvanov of two counts of constitutional violations, the Sofia News Agency reported.
The first incident was a news conference earlier this month when Parvanov, who was elected directly, suggested he held more power than the assembly.
"My place here is decided by 2 million voters, moreover, perhaps much more than all this majority together," Parvanov said.
That contradicts powers defined in the constitution, the report said.
The second allegation against Parvanov is that he released a transcript of a conversation he had with the finance minister, who wasn't aware the talk was being taped, the report said.
The assembly will begin debate on the impeachment resolution Wednesday and the matter will ultimately be decided by the Constitutional Court, the Bulgarian News Agency said.
