ABUJA, Nigeria, March 19 (UPI) -- Nigeria recalled its ambassador to Libya, saying Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi's remarks that Nigeria be split into Christian and Muslim states were offensive.
Nigeria's Foreign Ministry said Gadhafi's statement was "irresponsible," the BBC reported Friday.
Gadhafi said earlier this week a division of Christians and Muslims could prevent more violence between rival groups in central Nigeria, where hundreds have died this year in ethnic and religious clashes.
The foreign ministry said it would recall its ambassador from Tripoli for "urgent negotiations" because of the "irresponsible utterances" by Gadhafi.
"His theatrics and grandstanding at every auspicious occasion have become too numerous to recount," the statement said.
