Multiple strikes hobble Greek capital

ATHENS, Greece, March 18 (UPI) -- Taxi drivers and gas station workers joined Athens doctors in a strike Thursday to protest the Greek government's pay and benefit cuts and new taxes.

As Greek leaders were in talks with European Union officials in Brussels to address the country's $14 billion deficit, various union sectors staged 24-hour walkouts, the Kathimerini newspaper reported.

Cab drivers are protesting new legislation requiring them to issue receipts and pay tax on their income, while gas station workers allege higher taxes are driving their customers into Bulgaria for cheaper gas, the report said.

A strike by doctors that began Tuesday also was spreading outward from the capital, with many hospitals operating with skeleton staffs for emergencies only.

Scattered power outages were reported Wednesday as employees of the state power utility went on strike over wage cuts and hiring freezes.

A 24-hour walkout by radio technicians was scheduled Friday, canceling all live programming, the newspaper said.
