TAMPA, Fla., March 16 (UPI) -- Richard Howell hit a layup with 8 seconds left Tuesday, propelling North Carolina State to a 58-57 win over South Florida in an NIT game.
Sixth-seeded N.C. State (20-15) got 25 points from Dennis Horner and advances to take on No. 2 seed Alabama-Birmingham in the second round of the 2010 National Invitation Tournament.

The Wolfpack got 14 points from Tracy Smith while Howell ended with nine points in the victory.
Dominique Jones poured in 24 points and collected three steals to lead USF (20-13).
