DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, March 14 (UPI) -- Authorities in the United Arab Emirates sentenced a British couple to a month in prison for exchanging a kiss on the lips inside a Dubai restaurant.
The Sun (Britain) said Saturday while Charlotte Lewis, 25, and Ayman Najafi, 24, insist they only shared a kiss on the cheek, a Muslim mother testified in Dubai's Misdemeanors Court she witnessed the British couple kissing on the mouth last weekend.
The 38-year-old witness, whose identity was not released, also claimed Najafi and Lewis were stroking each other's backs during last Saturday's incident.
The Sun said Najafi and Lewis may appeal their sentences, which also includes deportation following the completion of their prison terms, in the hope of reduced sentences.
"They are desperate to persuade the court that they meant no offense," an unidentified legal source close to the couple said of the case involving Dubai's strict morality laws.
