DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, March 10 (UPI) -- Police in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Wednesday ordered spies to leave the Persian Gulf and accused Israel of falsifying passports.

"Those spies that are currently present in the Gulf must leave the region within one week. If not, then we will cross that bridge when we come to it," said Dahi Khalfan Tamim, a lieutenant general with the Dubai police.

The warning follows the Jan. 19 assassination of Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, which Dahi blamed on Israel, Gulf News reported Wednesday.

Dahi said he knew of spies holding passports from European countries "and others," though it was not clear if the warning was intended for spies working for European governments or those who use European passports to spy for other countries.

Dahi had no response when asked if he was referring to spies holding Arab passports. Dahi did accuse Israel of what he said was "vast falsification" of Western passports.

"We discover false passports on a daily basis," Dahi told Gulf News.
