ANKARA, Turkey, March 10 (UPI) -- At least 18 paintings are missing from the State Museum of Fine Arts in Ankara, the Turkish Radikal newspaper reported Wednesday.

Museum Manager Omer Osman Gundogdu said a full inventory was conducted after staff noticed some frames had been tampered with and it was discovered the paintings had been replaced with deceptive copies.

Five frames were found empty, while the other 13 were copies of works by artist Ali Riza, the report said.

Gundogdu said it couldn't have been a one-time theft.

"It is not something that happened yesterday. It is something that has been masterminded and carried out over the course of years," he told the newspaper.

No value was given for the missing pieces.

Police and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism are investigating, the report said.
