Police shoot, kill machete-wielding man

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, March 8 (UPI) -- The brother of a Canadian Indian in Winnipeg, Manitoba, says police who fatally shot his machete-wielding brother during the weekend did the right thing.

Eric Daniels, 28, was shot late Saturday after repeatedly refusing police orders to drop a machete, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

Three shots were fired as Daniels advanced on officers and at least one struck him in the chest, said Jackie Chaput, a police spokeswoman.

Daniels, who had a long police record involving problems with alcohol, later died in hospital.

His brother, 23-year-old Dallas Courchene, told the Winnipeg Sun he felt no ill will toward the police.

"My brother was responsible for his actions and he decided to do what he did even though he was drunk or intoxicated," he said. "I've had enough of aboriginals blaming police and saying it's racism. I'm aboriginal myself and I'm sick and tired of it."
