BRUSSELS, March 5 (UPI) -- Algirdas Semeta, taxation commissioner of the European Union, says the time is right to introduce a tax on carbon emissions.
In an interview with the European Voice, a weekly newspaper in Brussels, Semeta said a draft bill might be submitted to the European Commission next month.
Whether a Europe-wide tax can win approval is another question, the EU Observer reported. Laszlo Kovacs, the previous taxation commissioner, proposed a carbon tax in 2008, but the plan was dropped.
Britain has already said it would oppose such a tax and several other states are likely to agree that tax policy is a national prerogative. Several European countries, mostly in Scandinavia, already tax carbon emissions.
