THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The war crimes and genocide trial for former Bosnian Serb Gen. Zdravko Tolimir began Friday at the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Tolimir, 62, was arrested in May 2007 and charged with crimes relating to the 1995 genocide in the so-called United Nations safe haven of Srebrenica in Bosnia.
The charge alleges that under his leadership as assistant commander for intelligence and security, Bosnian Serb soldiers "summarily executed more than 1,700 Muslim men and boys at the Branjevo Military Farm and the Pilica Cultural Center," Radio Free Europe reported.
Tolimir elected to represent himself and at a pre-trial meeting Thursday was told he would be held to the same standards as a lawyer, the report said.
He was third on the list of wanted suspects before his arrest behind Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic, who was arrested in July 2008. Karadzic's trial begins March 1, and he also will represent himself.
The No. 1 suspect, Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic, remains at large and the Serbian government maintains it is doing all it can to apprehend him. He is also being sought in Bosnia.
