DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A 10 million-gallon aquarium in a Dubai mall filled with hundreds of sharks cracked Thursday, sending shoppers fleeing for safety as water gushed around them.
Stores were closed and security personnel were issued life jackets after the rift was exposed in the 30-inch wall of acrylic that separates hundreds of sharks, stingrays and other sea animals from the public, The Sun reported.
Video shot by a visitor at The Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo showed panicked shoppers running from the gushing water.
Mall officials said the rupture was fixed later in the day but they would not allow anyone access to view the damage.
"The leakage did not impact the aquarium environment or the safety of the aquatic animals," said Mohammad Alabbar, chairman Emaar Properties, the company that owns the mall.
The aquarium, one of the largest in the world, opened in 2008 at the base of the Bhurj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper.
