ANKARA, Turkey, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- At least 13 coal miners are dead after a methane gas explosion collapsed a tunnel in northwestern Turkey Tuesday night, government officials said.

There were 46 workers underground at the Sentas Madencilik mine near the town of Dursunbey when the explosion occurred, the Anatolia News Agency reported. Eight were declared dead at the scene and five others died from burns after reaching a hospital, officials said.

Eighteen other miners were injured and burned, nine of them seriously, the report said.

A methane explosion at the same mine in 2006 killed 17 miners and injured seven others, the news agency said.
