KIEV, Ukraine, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A cold snap that has clung to Eastern Europe since December has killed 408 people in Ukraine so far, health officials in Kiev said Thursday.
The health ministry said an additional 4,257 people were hospitalized since Dec. 18 as a result of cold-related health problems, the Ukrainian News Agency reported.
Nearly a quarter, or 126 of the deaths, were reported in the eastern Donetsk region, the report said.
Additionally, some 6,511 people sought emergency assistance related to the wintry conditions, the ministry said.
Also Wednesday, Emergencies Ministry spokesman Ihor Kril told the Interfax-Ukraine news agency at least 48 towns and villages in the southern Odessa and Mykolaiv regions were without electricity because of blowing snow and icy conditions.
The last major outage was Sunday, when storms knocked out power to more than 1,040 towns and villages in 12 regions, the report said.
