ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- An avalanche has killed at least 20 people and buried some 30 others under snow and ice in a remote mountain village in northern Pakistan, an official says.
The incident occurred in Kohistan district about 138 miles north of the capital of Islamabad, the Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported Thursday.
Police official Mohammad Sadiq said rescue teams recovered 20 bodies and 30 other people were reported buried under snow and ice.
"We fear some women and children were trapped," he said, adding four houses were completely buried by the avalanche and several other buildings were badly damaged.
It occurred Wednesday evening, local time.
A separate avalanche late Monday killed seven people in the northern district of Chitral.
Avalanches and landslides occur frequently in the mountains of Pakistan.
