AUSTIN, Texas, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- The attorney general of Texas says a divorce granted recently to a pair of lesbians is invalid because state law does not recognize their same-sex marriage.
Attorney General Greg Abbott recently went to court to try to block the divorce proceedings on the grounds that since Texas does not recognize homosexual marriage, the court cannot legally dissolve the marriage, which was performed in Massachusetts.
"Texas can't have a faulty precedent on the books that validates an illegal law," Abbott said in court documents.
The Houston Chronicle said Wednesday that Abbott's intervention came too late and the divorce was granted in Travis County on Feb. 10.
Sabina Daly of San Antonio and Angelique Naylor of Austin told the Chronicle their 2004 marriage fell apart in 2007 and petitioning for divorced status made it easier to sort out their affairs, which included a business they owned together and an adopted child.
"It wasn't about gay rights," said Naylor. "It was about two people who had serious legal issues that needed to be resolved."
