Ex-top chaplain faces 1972 sex charges

OTTAWA, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- The former Roman Catholic head chaplain of the Canadian military faces three sex-related charges involving another man in 1972, military officials said.

Roger Bazin, 72, was charged in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Tuesday by military police with sexual assault, gross indecency and buggery.

In the complaint filed through the civilian court, the victim alleges he was attacked by Bazin in 1972 at Canadian Forces Base Borden in Ontario, where Bazin was the base chaplain, the Toronto Sun reported.

The priest rose through the ranks and served as brigadier-general with command of all Catholic chaplains in the forces from 1992 to his retirement from the military in 1995.

Canada's Criminal Code no longer has buggery as an offense, but the 1972 version did and was applied against Bazin, the Toronto Star said.

Two weeks ago Col. Russell Williams, the base commander of Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Ontario, was arrested and charged with the murders of two women and the sexual assaults of two others.
