Aide to Myanmar opposition leader freed

YANGON, Myanmar, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A top aide to Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says he has been freed from six years of house arrest.

Tin Oo, vice chairman of Suu Kyi's party, said he plans to be back at work on Monday, CNN reported. An official came to his home late Saturday and read the release documents.

The military junta that seized control of Burma in 1962 and renamed it Myanmar has scheduled elections later this year.

Suu Kyi, who has spent most of the past two decades confined to her home, is scheduled to be released in May. Her house arrest was extended last year after she was convicted of violating its terms by meeting with American John Yettaw, who swam across a lake to reach her without her permission.

The last election in the country in 1990 was won by Suu Kyi's party. The junta voided the results.
