PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- At least two politically connected U.S. firms are lobbying for millions of dollars in cleanup contracts for Haiti's earthquake wreckage, officials said.
Florida-based AshBritt and Alabama-based DRC group want to clear the rubble of an estimated 225,000 collapsed homes and 25,000 office and government buildings, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.
Randal Perkins, who heads AshBritt, already has met with Haitian President Rene Preval and has enlisted Gilbert Bigio, a wealthy Haitian businessman, as his partner, the Herald reported.
Bob Isakson, managing director of DRC Group, also has met with Preval and had volunteer workers on the ground in Haiti within 36 hours after the Jan. 12 quake hit. DRC since has made a charter plane available for relief efforts and its workers have been helping remove bodies from debris sites, Isakson told the Herald.
It's unclear how the cleanup contracts will be awarded and when, but Preval is expected to play a key role in the assignments.
