Poll: Britons both gloomy and optimistic

LONDON, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- British voters are both pessimistic about the state of the country and optimistic about its future, a poll suggests.

A Populus poll for The Times of London published Tuesday says 70 percent of respondents agree that British society is broken, much as a Conservative Party campaign theme asserts, while 68 percent of respondents said people who play by the rules get a raw deal.

The Times reported another 82 percent say they think it is time for a change while nearly three-fifths agreed that they hardly recognize the country they are living in. On the latter question, women, working-class people and Tory voters were more likely to agree, the newspaper said.

But on the other hand, some 60 percent of those polled reportedly indicated they regard the future with optimism while 38 percent expressed anxiety about the future. One-half of those polled said Britain's best years are yet to come, while 45 percent said its best years are behind it.

Support for the beleaguered Labor Party also ticked up two points to 30 percent, The Times said.

The newspaper did not provide methodology for the poll.
