MILAN, Italy, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi likely will have trouble chewing for the rest of his life because of injuries from an assault, medical examiners said.
The finding that the prime minister suffered permanent injuries could affect the charges against his alleged assailant, the Italian news agency ANSA reported. Massimo Tartaglia, a man with a history of mental illness, has been charged with hitting Berlusconi with a replica of Milan's historic Duomo, or cathedral, during a rally in the city in December.
The medical examiners also shortened the length of Berlusconi's official convalescence from 90 days to 20 to 40 days. That could mean a charge of simple assault, while Berlusconi's lawyer argues the permanent injuries should mean a charge of aggravated assault with a potential sentence of seven to 10 years.
Tartaglia's lawyers are expected to ask that he serve any sentence in a mental health facility. He was moved from jail Monday to a mental hospital.
Berlusconi had a tooth implant and reconstructive surgery after the attack.
