TEL AVIV, Israel, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Immigration officers overstepped their authority in arresting two pro-Palestinian activists from Spain and Australia, Israel's high court said Monday.
Israel's Supreme Court ordered Ariadna Jove Marti, of Spain, and Bridgette Chappell, of Australia, released on bail, Haaretz reported.
Marti and Chappell were detained Sunday when Israeli soldiers raided the West Bank city of Ramallah and then handed the women over to immigration officers for deportation.
The women are members of the International Solidarity Movement, which has been leading protests against Israel's West Bank separation barrier.
In its ruling, the court said immigration officers had taken custody of the women at a prison inside the West Bank when they were authorized only to operate inside Israel.
The court barred the women from returning to the West Bank but said they could file an appeal against deportation from Israel.
The women's lawyer said their arrest was part of an illegal campaign to halt protests by Palestinians, liberal Israelis and foreign peace activists.
