BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Former Argentina President Nestor Kirchner remained in intensive care Monday after emergency surgery, medical officials said.
A statement issued Sunday night by Dr. Marcelo Ballesteros indicated Kirchner, now a national lawmaker, would remain in the ICU of the Los Arcos hospital in Buenos Aires for 48 hours, the Buenos Aires Herald reported.
The newspaper quoted Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana as saying the operation had been successful and that "everything is fine, the news is good."
Several of Argentina's ministers and national politicians were reportedly at the hospital, as was President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Kirchner's wife.
The Herald said Nestor Kirchner was rushed to the hospital after a medical issue related to his carotid artery, one of the two main neck arteries that carry blood from the heart to the brain.
The situation prompted Buenos Aires Archbishop Cardenal Jorge Bergoglio to send a priest to the hospital, who administered the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick to Kircher, the Herald said.
