PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Haitian jails are filled with inmates who have not made appearances before judges because of the Jan. 12 earthquake, The Washington Post reported Sunday.
The newspaper said the country's judicial system was brought to a halt by the quake, when Port-au-Prince's courthouse was leveled. Now, it said, more than half of the 81 prisoners at the capital's main police station are housed in a makeshift cell and has become a scene of squalor.
The Post said one prisoner, Bouzy Archange Jr., said from behind its bars, "It's hell. H-E-L-L," and noting that two prisoners fighting each other nearby is something that happens all the time.
"You have to watch yourself," he told the newspaper, which said there is no room to lie down in the cell and no safety measures.
"You have to understand it's a crisis," the police station's Commissioner Michel Ange Gedeon told the Post. "We can't do anything."
"We're doing the best we can," added Justice Ministry Director Geberal Antoine Andre.
