PROMAHON, Greece, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Greek farmers protesting low prices Saturday blocked a key crossing to Bulgaria as they scaled back roadblocks elsewhere in Greece, authorities said.
Farmers removed their equipment from 13 roadblocks in central and northern Greece, while trucks for the third week in a row blocked the border between Promahon, Greece, and Kulata, Bulgaria, Kathimerini reported.
"We're retreating but we're not backing down. We are going to wait and see if the government makes good on its promises," said Stathis Tsaprounis, a union worker representing farmers at a blockade in central Greece.
Some protesting farmers said they understood the cash-strapped Greek government was in no position to subsidize them. Nonetheless, they said they expected some kind of support, possibly better terms for bank loans.
Saturday, an estimated 200 tractor-trailers lined up at the Kulata-Promathon crossing, backing up traffic for miles on the Greek side of the border.
Bulgarian businesses hurt by the blockade threatened to block the Bulgarian side of the border if the protests weren't halted, Novonite reported Saturday.
