CARACAS, Venezuela, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Critics say a man who once served as a rebel under former Cuban leader Fidel Castro should not be working as a consultant in Venezuela.
Author Ann Louise Bardach said Ramiro Valdes should not have been hired to help Venezuela deal with its ongoing energy crisis, saying the 77-year-old former rebel's past shows a willingness to use crackdowns, CNN reported Friday.
"His reputation is as a ruthless minister of interior," said Bardach, who discussed Valdes in her book "Without Fidel: A Death Foretold in Miami, Havana and Washington."
Only four of the original rebels who aided Castro during the Cuban Revolution of the 1950s are still alive.
Enzo Betancourt, head of Venezuela's Association of Engineers, also expressed concern with Valdes' consultant post given how Venezuela already has its fair share of qualified engineers.
"For us engineers in Venezuela, it makes no sense," Betancourt.
CNN said whatever the case, Venezuela could endure a complete electric collapse if someone is unable to determine what has been causing electricity shortages and rolling blackouts.
