JERUSALEM, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A methamphetamine-based drug developed by the German Nazis to increase stamina is being smuggled into Israel from Thailand, officials said.
In Thailand, the drug is called Yaba, or Crazy Medicine. In western countries, it's called Nazi Speed or Hitler's Drug, The Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday.
"It's mainly aimed at Thai workers. It allows them to work for two days straight," said Gadi Barel, director of investigations at Ben-Gurion Airport.
Sunday, airport authorities found 5,000 tablets of Yaba hidden in a package mailed from Thailand. Last year, 10,219 Yaba pills were seized at Ben-Gurion Airport -- 15 times more than were seized at the airport in 2008, Barel told the Post in a story published Tuesday.
The drug was banned in Thailand in the 1970s but remains popular, Barel said, adding there are an estimated million Yaba addicts in Bangkok alone.
"We still don't know if it is spreading among Israelis," Barel said, "but it is fair to assume that it is."
