New Russian fighter makes its debut

MOSCOW, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- The Russian fifth-generation fighter jet took its first flight Friday in the Far East with officials deeming it a success.

During its 45-minute flight over Komsomolsk-on-Amur, "the plane proved itself very well," a spokeswoman for Sukhoi Co., the plane's designer, said. "All our expectations for the first flight came true."

The ITAR-tass report did not give the name of the fighter-bomber, but the fifth-generation aircraft has been dubbed the Sukhoi PAK FA, or T-50 in other reports.

The flight was originally planned for Thursday, but was postponed by unfavorable weather.
