It was the second day of shelling in the area, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.

An unidentified defense official in Seoul told Yonhap North Korea started lobbing shells in the vicinity of Yeonpyeong Island about 8:15 a.m. local time.

The North had fired up to 100 shells north of the demarcation line Wednesday. The South responded with warning shots of its own following that initial barrage.
