WARSAW, Poland, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Dignitaries and former prisoners traveled to Poland Wednesday to mark the 65th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp.

A conference, "Memory, Awareness, Education," kicked off the ceremonies, Polskie Radio reported.

"I would expect the ministers to stress the importance of this education as an obligation towards former inmates to continue their task," Auschwitz Museum Deputy Director Krystyna Oleksy said. "After all, this museum has been founded thanks to the initiative of former prisoners who say: Don't forget and teach others about this."

More than 150 former prisoners, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek were expected to attend the ceremonies.

An exhibition sponsored by Russia relates the story of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration camp by soldiers of Russia's 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front, the radio network said.

Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated Jan. 27, 1945.
