THE HAGUE, Netherlands, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- The government of Kenya must protect the witnesses to its post-election riots in 2007 and 2008, the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court says.
Luis Moreno Ocampo says the ICC has written to the Kenyan government to express concerns that witnesses to the violence that left 1,300 people dead are being intimidated, Radio France Internationale reported Wednesday.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has received reports from people who say they were intimidated after agreeing to testify at the government's inquiry into riots that followed national elections.
Hassan Omar Hassan, deputy commission chairman, said the intimidation reports are likely to have an effect on the ICC's investigation.
The International Criminal Court plans to prosecute the riots' organizers.
