Speed caused Iran train derailment

JOGHATAY, Iran, Jan. 24 (UPI) -- Iranian officials say excessive speed was the cause of a train derailment that killed at least seven people.

Accident investigator Qazanfar Fouladi told reporters Sunday an initial probe indicated the rail mishap was due to the engineering driving the train too fast before it entered a station in the city of Joghatay in northeastern Iran, Press TV reported.

Several cars of the train, en route from Tehran to Mashhad, came off the tracks around 10 a.m. Saturday in Iran's northeastern province of Khorasan Razavi.

Twenty-two people were hurt in the crash in addition to the seven killed, the Iranian broadcaster said.
