Man accidentally shoots self at gun show
BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- Residents of Queensland, Australia, prepared Saturday for heavy rain and fierce winds as Cyclone Olga neared Cape Flattery, authorities said.
The Category 1 cyclone was expected to cause unusually high tides along the Queensland coast, where storm warnings were issued Saturday from Cape Flattery to Innisfail, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Olga was expected to intensify into a Category 2 cyclone by the time it made landfall Sunday.
Green Island Resort, east of Cairns, was evacuated in advance of the cyclone and all Great Barrier Reef tours canceled, The Brisbane Courier-Mail reported.
Cairns Airport was on a heightened level of alert after the storm was upgraded to a cyclone but no flights had been canceled Saturday.
Olga formed unexpectedly in the Coral Sea Friday after tropical cyclone Neville weakened and dissipated.
