KABUL, Afghanistan, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- U.S. Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, leader of international forces in Afghanistan, praised the Afghan troops for their response to attacks by Taliban Monday.
Afghan and Kabul security forces fought with insurgents in Kabul who used rocket-propelled grenades and small arms, killing at least six of the insurgents, the U.S. Defense Department said in a release. Two deaths were reported among Afghan forces.
"Afghan National Security Forces effectively dealt with the situation and should be commended," McChrystal said, calling the Taliban attack on the Afghan capital "another example of their brutality and contempt for the Afghan people."
Reports of civilian injuries and deaths were unclear, the Pentagon said.
The U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan condemned the attack.
"We are aware that the Taliban have claimed responsibility for this attack," mission spokesman Aleem Siddique said. "We condemn this attack unreservedly. It is of particular concern that this took place in an area with so many civilians present."
