LAGOS, Portugal, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A former police detective said at a libel trial in Portugal that missing girl Madeleine McCann was likely not abducted through a window at a resort apartment.
While the British girl's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, maintain their daughter disappeared from their vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, by being passed through a window, former detective Moita Flores testified he doubts such a scenario, Sky News reported Wednesday.
"I have spoken to respected experts on crime and none of them agrees it would be possible to pass a child through the window," Flores testified regarding the 2007 disappearance of the then-3-year-old child.
"It would have been a very stupid person who tried to pass a sleeping child through the window of the McCanns' holiday flat."
Sky News said the libel suit is an attempt by the McCanns to ban a book by former police detective Goncalo Amaral. In the book "Maddie: The Truth of the Lie," Amaral alleges the young girl died in the resort apartment.
