TORONTO, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A Toronto man narrowly escaped death awaiting emergency heart surgery as a cardiologist was being ticketed by police for speeding to the hospital.
Dr. Michael Kutryk was summoned from his home to St. Michael's Hospital midday Saturday for a 47-year-old man who had a major heart attack while under observation and required an emergency angioplasty, the Toronto Star reported.
Kutryk was stopped by a police officer and ticketed $300 after being clocked doing 45 mph in a 25 mph zone, which delayed him at least 10 minutes, the newspaper said.
The partner of the sick man told the Star Kutryk explained why he was late and was very apologetic and angry about the delay.
Kutryk did not respond to interview requests, but a senior police officer confirmed the doctor was pursuing the incident privately and intended to contest the fine.
Police said they don't escort civilians at high speed because of liability concerns, the Star said.
The patient was in guarded condition in the cardiac intensive care unit Tuesday.
