Cold cancels Paris-London rail service

LONDON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Arctic conditions disrupted road, rail and air travel throughout Britain Saturday as the region braced for more snow, officials said.

Early-morning and late-night rail service between London and Paris was canceled because of freezing temperatures in the channel tunnel connecting England and France, The Times of London reported.

The coldest weather in 30 years diverted, delayed and canceled flights at airports in Belfast, Dublin and London and many communities reported running low on salt and sand to clear roads, The Scotsman reported.

At least 24 deaths in Britain have been attributed to the cold since late December. Dalwhinnie in the Scottish Highlands saw Britain's lowest temperature Friday with a reading of minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit.

Temperatures throughout Britain were expected to ease slightly during the next few days, though more snow was reported on the way for the entire region.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged elderly people to take special precautions and to accept payments offered by the government through special cold weather programs.
