Aid convoy to Gaza clashes with police

CAIRO, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Clashes broke out Wednesday between Egyptian police and members of a humanitarian convoy headed for Gaza, a security official said.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said the confrontation began after the convoy reached El-Arish Port and participants were told some of the vehicles would be barred from leaving the port because some of the cargo couldn't be classified as aid, Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported.

Some of the convoy participants tried to leave the port, while others allegedly started fires then tried to prevent fire officials from extinguishing them, the news agency reported.

Officials said security forces used water hoses to disperse the crowd and arrested seven people.

The Viva Palestina convoy, led by British lawmaker George Galloway, is carrying food, medicine and supplies to Gaza.
