Dog saves boy from attacking cougar

BOSTON BAY, British Columbia, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- A retriever dog is expected to recover after saving her 11-year-old master from a cougar attack in their Canadian back yard, officials say.

Family members said the dog, Angel, intercepted a cougar Saturday as it was charging at Austin Forman, 11, in his back yard in Boston Bar, British Columbia, a rural community about 125 miles northeast of Vancouver, The Globe and Mail reported.

Jay Forman, Austin's father, said the wildcat dragged the dog under a porch after Austin fled. A police officer responding to the scene arrived in time to shoot the cougar without injuring Angel.

"We brought (the cougar) out on the snow, the dog was laying there lifeless," Jay Forman told The Globe and Mail, adding that as the family gathered to console Austin, the dog suddenly sprang up, "coughed a bit of blood ... started wagging her tail, snuggled up to Austin and licked him."

The newspaper said the Formans' home is near the Trans-Canada Highway, but the area is sparsely populated.
