Slain son of reputed mobster remembered

MONTREAL, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Friends and family took part in visitations in honor of Nicolo Rizzuto, the slain son of reputed Montreal mobster Vito Rizzuto, a family friend said.

The last of three visitations at a Montreal-area funeral home took place Friday night and a funeral for Nicolo Rizzuto was to take place Saturday afternoon, The (Montreal) Gazette reported.

"There were lots of people and lots of flowers," France Monk, identified as a friend of Rizzuto's family, said of Friday's visitation.

Nicolo Rizzuto was fatally shot Monday in Montreal's Notre Dame de Grace neighborhood. The deadly shooting may represent an attempt by street gangs to assume control of Montreal's drug trade, The Gazette reported.

Rizzuto's father is in the United States serving a 10-year prison sentence for racketeering. It was unclear whether the elder Rizzuto, who is scheduled for release in 2012, would be allowed to attend his son's funeral.
