HUGH TOWN, England, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Four fishermen were plucked to safety Thursday after their trawler caught fire off Britain's Isles of Scilly, officials said.

A Royal Navy helicopter, an Isles of Scilly lifeboat and two fishing boats took part in the rescue, which took place in heavy swells and brisk winds, the BBC reported. The Penzance-registered trawler Trevessa had issued a mayday alert about 4:30 p.m., the network said.

The fisherman, who were winched to safety and flown to a hospital in Truro, suffered smoke inhalation. It appeared they were not seriously injured, the BBC said.
