Mine death toll at six, five missing

BEIJING, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Chinese rescuers Wednesday found the body of one of six miners missing in a mine gas burst, raising the death toll in the Monday incident to six.

The search went on for five missing at the coal mine in southwest Yunnan Province, China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported. The sixth victim's body was recovered about 200 feet away from the exit.

About 110 people were involved in the rescue effort, authorities said. The cause of the gas burst was being investigated.

The Yunnan mine accident was one of two almost simultaneous emergencies occurring Sunday night and Monday morning.

The Sunday accident also involved coal gas burst at Jiexiu city in Shanxi province in which 12 miners died. Four miners were hospitalized with injuries.

China has been plagued by mine accidents despite efforts to improve safety standards. In one of the worst disasters, a mine explosion in northeast Heilongjiang province last month killed at least 107 miners.
