VIENTIANE, Laos, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The U.N. refugee agency Tuesday asked Laotian government officials for access to about 4,000 Hmong Laotians deported from Thailand.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has no formal presence in Laos, where many of the ethnic Hmong aided the United States in its fight against communism in the 1960s and '70s, the United Nations said in a release. When the Pathet Lao rose to power in 1975, tens of thousands of Hmong sought asylum in Thailand, while others resettled in countries such as the United States.

Despite its history as a country of asylum, Thailand Monday began deporting the Hmong from two camps. The U.N. refugee agency said it was not given access to people in one facility.

High Commissioner Antonio Guterres Monday unsuccessfully urged the Thai government to halt the forced repatriation.

The agency said the process of repatriation should be transparent and no one with a valid protection claim should be forcibly returned to Laos.
