Search under way for boat crash victims

MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- A search continued Saturday for 24 people missing since their boat crashed and sank off the coast of the Philippines, authorities said.

Coast Guard Adm. Wilfredo Tamayo said divers were using deep-sea equipment in an attempt to reach the wreckage of the Catalyn B that lies nearly 220 feet underwater offshore from Cavite province, The Philippine Star reported in its Sunday edition.

"They are now descending with the proper search equipment so they can locate the wreckage underneath and hopefully conduct the diving operations and find out the condition of the vessel," Tamayo said.

Tamayo said the sea current could potentially have altered the location of the wreckage.

The Catalyn B sank after colliding with a metal-hulled fishing boat named the Anatalia near Manila Bay Thursday.

The Star said three bodies were found afterward and 46 people were rescued.

Searches by surveillance aircraft and rescue ships following the sinking did not discover any additional survivors.
